Des Davis
Born amongst the sugar cane and mangos in Ayr, North Queensland in 1930;
moved to Sydney ahead of the feared Japanese invasion in 1941; lived in the eastern suburbs and joined the posh kids with a scholarship to Sydney Grammar;went to Sydney Uni and graduated in chess and B.A (Hons History) 1955; taught High School in Lismore and Lithgow and then Drama and English at Newcastle Teachers’ College; pursued an ambition to see snow by migrating with wife Faye and four children to Canada in 1970; lectured in Drama at Brock University on the Niagara Peninsula 1971-1979 and, with Faye, founded a professional Children’s Theatre Company (still going); tired of snow and ice-hockey, returned to Australia as Senior lecturer in Drama and English at Wollongong University in 1980; in that same year, again with Faye, founded Theatre South, one of six regional theatres in NSW; remained Artistic Director of Theatre South until 2003, in the meantime picking up in 1995 an OAM for his contribution to theatre, and a Writers Guild AWGIE for his support of Australian playwrights; in 2003 Theatre south became the latest theatre casualty of failed gov’t subsidy and closed down so Des and Faye began their third age with a move to Port Macquarie in 2007 and a final farewell to theatre with a PhD in History and Politics on the topic of the decline of regional theatre; Des and Faye find time to entertain eight lively grandchildren (still counting) ranging in age downwards from 29 to 3 years, with another one due this year, and one great grandchild. Religiously unconvinced and politically more or less centre left; he looks forward to enjoying his new role as President of HVU3A
